Five Children’s Books Guiding Us Through Lent

Lent begins tomorrow, starting with Ash Wednesday. We’re exploring five meaningful Lent books for kids that are gently guiding our family through this sacred season. 🙏🏽💜

We are also using these faith-based books as part of our homeschooling studies. This will give us an opportunity to reserve more time for deeper reflection and help us grow in understanding and devotion.

Here are a few kids’ books about Lent we’re reading this season.

1. Child’s Guide to Mass by Sue Stanton (2000) — Understanding the Catholic Mass can be challenging for adults and children alike. So, I love how this picture book is written in a fun story format that will hold my kids’ attention and keep them engaged.

Sarah, the main character of the story, invites the reader to attend Mass with her. She explains every part of the Mass including the Introductory Rite, Penitential Rite, Liturgy of the Word, and Homily.

There are even questions throughout the story that invites children to find key terms and identify faith symbols in the illustrations.

2. I Believe: The Nicene Creed illustrated by Pauline Baynes (2003) — In this book, the late author and illustrator Pauline Baynes shows the beauty of the profession of faith in her remarkable illustrations of angels, Christ’s passion, animals, beasts, and celestial imagery.

It’s a lovely book to read for prayer time with the kids, as part of a homeschooling lesson, to take to church, or even as a bedtime story.

3. Stories of the Saints: Bold and Inspirong Tales of Adventure, Grace, and Courage by Carey Wallace (2020) — This isn’t a book on Lent. However, we just started learning more about saints this month. So, we are going to include this book with our Lent studies.

Stories of the Saints features 70 saints such as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Monica, Francis, Thomas Aquinas, Joan of Arc, and Moses the Strong.

The illustrations are beautiful and reminds me of graphic novel art style. I only wish the saints were featured chronologically in order according to their feast days.

4. Lenten Survival Guide for Kids by Peter Celano (2014) — I like how this Lenten guide explains to kids the meaning of Lent and how to practice it in a relatable and sometimes funny way.

This guide features what Lent means, what is fasting, prayers for kids to say, Stations of the Cross, scripture references, and encourages regular Bible reading for the children.

5. An Introduction to the Liturgical Year by Inos Biffi (1994) — This book is perfect for year-round guidance for kids to help them grasp the Catholic Liturgical Year. It helps children (and dare I say even the grownups!) understand the feasts as they are reflected in the missal.

For Lent purposes, there are features on the meaning of Lent, the significance of 40 days depicted numerous times in the Bible, the objection of Peter, Jesus is the living water, Jesus is the light of the world, Holy Week, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and so much more!

I plan on purchasing this book for our home library collection so we can use it throughout the Liturgical Year.

So far, our library picks on Lent books for kids are serving as a great guide for our faith journey, adding a meaningful rhythm to our Lenten days.

Are there any other children’s books you’d recommend for Lent?

Happy Friday

Three things to reflect on in honor of September 11th.

Heart pancakes and a homeschool refresh

How was your weekend? We had another chill weekend, which the kids loved because every Saturday they like to have a pajama day. 😄

For Valentine’s Day, the kids wanted to make heart-shaped pancakes. Travis helped them with the cooking, and then they each took turns using a heart cookie cutter to create the heart shape.

I had my Canon camera out from snapping photos of the birds on our patio, so Zaya (5) and Zephaniah (8) asked if they could use the camera to take pictures of their Valentine pancakes. 🥞🥰

Future food bloggers! 📸👩🏼‍🍳🧑🏽‍🍳😁

Some of the pancakes were a little “well done” 😖😅, but the kids still loved eating them! 🙌🏾

I also did a lot of reading this weekend. 📚 I’m currently on chapter 21 of Outlander, my recent library book checkout.

Now that I’m halfway into the novel, Jamie and Claire are keeping me on the edge of my seat. It seems they are always finding themselves in a tricky situation. 🫣

On Sunday, we went to Mass, and Travis helped me with reorganizing our homeschool space.

I think I’m in a spring cleaning mood now that the weather is starting to warm up. I have a list of house projects I can’t wait to get started on this spring, including thrifting gently loved wood bookshelves!

Just a few photos of some of the progress we made. 😊 Overall, I think we did a good job with organizing my teacher books, the kids’ books, and our art materials.

About every three months, I like to refresh our space. It helps with focus and keeping the energy positive. 😌🙏🏽✨️

I’ve had this pothos plant for two years now, and it has grown into such a vivacious plant! 🪴

We love having it on our art shelf with the trailing vines hanging on the wall. It brings life and “good vibes” to the room. 🌿🙏🏽

And that was our chill weekend! Hope you find moments of joy this week.

💜 XO

Happy Friday!

Four fun things for Friday, including a new art exhibit I’m excited to see.

A productive day out to the dentist and library

Exhausted and inspired. That’s how I’m feeling right now.

Zephaniah (8) had a dentist appointment today. He did great! No tears. The dentist was finished in about 30 minutes.

Zephaniah at the dentist. They give the kids fun sunglasses to wear so the bright light doesn’t bother their eyes. 😎

The kids are really thriving with the new dentist office we switched to (in December). I think it’s because this practice is calmer and quieter.

They don’t feel anxious and overwhelmed at the new dentist like they did at the other dental office we used to go to.

And honestly—same! 💯😂

After the dentist and a cozy lunch at home, we went to the library to checkout new books. I also let the kids play for a while. Whenever we go to the library, we stay for at least two hours.

I spent over two hours (maybe three? 😆) researching and finding the books we need for homeschooling in February and March.

I can’t wait to dive into these new library checkouts! I’m a total geek when it comes to getting new books and materials for our homeschool. 🤓📚😂

But even though I’m excited for the new books we collected, this mama is pooped! 💩😴

We ended up getting home around 7 p.m. (the library closes at 8! Lol) and eating dinner late. It was worth it because today was a happy, productive day! 💯😊📚

Time for bed! 😴

P.S.— Here are a few moments from today.

A simple lunch before heading out to the library.
Zaya (5) and Zephaniah (8) pulling the wagon to the library. 📚
The library was hosting a book fair! 📚 I’m thinking about taking the kids back so they can pick ONE book to buy.
Zephaniah checking out the axolotl merch at the book fair. The kids are obsessed with axolotls! 😅
🍕 Zaya (5) was excited to show me this pizza book from the book fair. 😊
Zechariah (10) really wanted to get this book. 🫣 We ended up checking it out at the library. I just don’t understand the kids’ interest in Five Nights at Freddy. It’s so weird to me! Lol

Cozy breakfast

Lately, Zephaniah (8) has been waking up earlier than usual. (This may also be another sign that spring is on the way.)

When he gets up early like this, he always finds me cooking breakfast in the kitchen. On this particular day, I was making French Toast.

Zephaniah immediately ran to the bathroom to wash his hands. Then, he grabbed his dinosaur apron.

After I tied his apron for him, he picked up the spatula and checked the French Toast cooking in the cast iron skillet.

“It’s not ready yet,” he said to me. He didn’t even say good morning! Lol! 😂

So, for breakfast we had homemade French Toast, eggs, turkey bacon, grapefruit slices, and tea. The kids now LOVE having hot, herbal tea with their breakfast.

Well, except for Zhen (13). She still doesn’t like the way tea tastes. 😏

It makes me happy that I have passed on my love for tea to the children. I think that one day Zhen will change her mind about liking tea. I told her she just needs to find the right blend. That’s how I fell in love with it.

I discovered a small business owner who makes the best tea blends I have ever had in my life! After that, she converted me into a tea lover. 😅🫖😍

I love how our mornings have transitioned into a cozy rhythm of cooking a homemade breakfast and sipping tea together.

Candlemas

I’m not really sure why, but this is the first time I have ever heard of Candlemas (Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ). Maybe in the past, I had heard it mentioned, but I just didn’t make the connection.

One of my 2026 goals is to grow deeper in my faith by attending an occasional weekday Mass and participate more fully in the Church calendar.

So, when I learned of Candlemas (just yesterday), I said to Travis, “I think I’m going to take the kids and go.”

And so we did! 😊💜🙏🏽

Here are a few moments from today’s Candlemas and our homeschooling day.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas, is celebrated on February 2nd.
Our candle that we had blessed at today’s Candlemas Mass. Next year, we will definitely bring more candles with us!
Zephaniah (8) helping me shred cheese for lunch.
For today’s lunch we had a taco bowl—taco meat, rice, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese, and a dollop of sour cream on top with a taco shell on the side. 🌮
For Math, we played a game of Monopoly Junior (I highly recommend this game for elementary-age children!).
Math board games are a great way for kids to practice their math skills without feeling weighed down by worksheets and book work.

A little reset

This week, I’ve been focusing on refreshing the rooms and spaces in the downstairs part of our house. I told Travis I realized I do this about every three months.

I always feel happy and refreshed after I rearrange the furniture and organize any clutter that has accumulated over the months. With a big family like ours (8 people!), it’s hard to avoid any clutter. 😆

Reorganizing our home and rearranging furniture in the rooms helps reduce my anxiety. It also helps me focus and have mental clarity.

ChatGPT says, “people who do this usually process emotions through environment, need visual freshness to feel energized, think spatially, and are creative + intuitive.”

YES! 1,000% this is me!

Valentine’s Day Decorations

Today, we went to Hobby Lobby to get a few Valentine’s Day decorations. ❤️

Hobby Lobby is just like Target for me—it’s my one weakness. I think it’s the sales that get me. Lol

You go in the store planning to stick to your short list, and next thing you know, you walk out of the store with more items than you had planned! 😆

Zaya (5) really loved this pink, sequin Valentine heart. 💗

The kids were excited to decorate for Valentine’s Day and make a few crafts. They LOVE decorating for holidays and making crafts!

As soon as we got home from the store, they started digging through the shopping bags and pulled out the decor and the Valentine’s craft kits they picked out.

I also bought some more construction paper and Valentine’s color-themed pipe cleaners (Chenille stems) so we can make some homemade crafts, too. 😊

Here are a few moments from today. 💗

“And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.” — Colossians 3:14

One more thing…

I just need twenty minutes

On the way to the grocery store, Zaya (5) was watching Bluey (season three, episode eleven) on our minivan DVD player. The episode was about Bluey’s mom Chilli needing a twenty-minute break.

Chilli says to her husband Bandit she needs “20 minutes when no one comes near me.”

I chuckled when I heard this line because, as a mom of six kids, it is very relatable. Bluey always has the best teachable moments for parents kids don’t you think? 😉

And as it turns out—today has been one of those crazy, busy days for us (Tuesdays usually are).

But the craziest part of our day? First thing in the morning, I found a squirrel in my basement! 😱🐿

It was just chilling in our basement looking at me while sitting on one of our storage shelves. We think the squirrel came in through the dryer vent.

So, yeah—I just need twenty minutes! 😫😂

Here are a few moments from today.

Math lesson time! 😊
I bought myself a bag of Dove’s chocolate for when I just need 20 minutes. 🍫
Zephaniah (8) organized his dinosaur cards by height—from tallest dinosaur to the shortest dinosaur.
Leftover honey jars make great candy jars.

Happy Birthday, Mac Miller

Today, I learned that yesterday was the late Mac Miller’s birthday. He would have been 34 years old.

How very fitting because as it turns out for about two weeks now, I’ve been listening to his album Circles almost daily.

It’s my favorite Mac Miller album, and a few times out of the year, I will listen to it over and over.

I’m still so sad he passed away. He was so young and incredibly talented. 🕊🙏🏽💜

RIP Mac Miller

Cooking Dinner in the Morning Saves Time

I started cooking dinner in the morning time. It makes a HUGE difference in my day. I feel less stressed when 4 p.m. rolls around and I know dinner is already prepared. BIG mom win! 💯

Today’s dinner: BBQ chicken, rice, and cream of corn for the kids, broccoli for me. I don’t know how they like cream of corn. I think it’s so gross. 😆

The weather forecast for this weekend!

Below Freezing Temps This Weekend

I’m worried about the weather for the weekend. The low is supposed to be between -7°F to -10°F. 😲

WHAT EVEN IS THAT?!! 😱🥶

So basically, we’ll be in the house all weekend. I hope we can make it to church. I’m going to go ahead and do the grocery shopping Thursday before the freezing temps hit us.

Here are a few moments from today.

Zaya (5) placing Stitch and Pandy on my bed.
Reading practice with Zephaniah (8).
Little Junco at my patio bird feeder. The Blie Jays, Juncos, Mourning Doves, and Sparrows have been eating all throughout the day at my bird feeders to prepare for the upcoming freezing cold.
Writing practice with Zechariah (10). Ever since we started working on writing skills with Building Writers (from Handwriting Without Tears) and The Usborne Creative Writing Book, Zechariah’s and Zhen’s writing has improved so much! I love that the writing activities are engaging, fun, and brief.
For some creative time, Zechariah worked on making a stop motion video. We got him this film slate for Christmas because he’s always making mini movies.
Todays art activity was creating a design with diagonal, horizontal, and vertical lines using strips of construction paper.
The kids really loved this art activity, and they got creative with it creating their own designs.
This is the art book we’ve been using. We’re loving it so far!

I’m getting closer to finishing my 1,000 piece Jane Austen puzzle!

MLK, Jr. Day

For the last few years, I have tried to take the kids to an MLK, Jr. Day event, but the weather was always too cold.

Today was no different—it was freezing cold just like it always is every MLK Day. We got hit by an arctic blast, and the temps were 18° for the high and about 7° for the low! 🥶

However, I was determined to make it happen this time, so we were able to attend an MLK, Jr. Day Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

The Mass celebration and music were beautiful! I’m so glad we were able to brave the cold weather and attend the service.

Here are a few moments from our MLK, Jr. Day.

Once we got back home, I spent the rest of the afternoon working on my Jane Austen puzzle.
