Broken sunflowers still bloom 🌻

In the springtime, Travis and I discovered volunteer sunflower sprouts growing in between the sidewalk.

I’m pretty sure the sunflower seeds were left behind in the wintertime by the birds and squirrels when I put up bird feeders.

So, we gently moved the sunflower sprouts to our garden bed.

We managed to “rescue” six of the eight sunflower sprouts we found in the sidewalk. All six of the sprouts recovered from transplant shock and grew strong and tall.

But as many gardeners know, sunflower stems can still be fragile, especially during storms or when pesky squirrels are rummaging through your garden. 😏🐿

A squirrel broke the stem of one of our sunflowers. 😭🌻
Another broken sunflower stem. 😫 This time the squirrel was stealing some of my cherry tomatoes, which is planted next to a sunflower.

The beautiful thing about sunflowers, though, is that they are resilient plants.

Despite nature’s challenges, sunflowers will try very hard to keep growing, even when broken. Sometimes they just need a little help.

This is something I have learned this gardening season.

She’s a fighter!

I was able to save one broken sunflower plant by trimming down the stem and placing it in a vase of water.

The sunflower still bloomed, and the bees loved it!

Another sunflower plant with a broken stem (thanks squirrel! 🐿😏) Travis was able to make a stick-based cast for it.

And the other day, that sunflower bud still bloomed!

It makes me happy that even though a couple of our sunflowers experienced hardships, we were still able to give the flowers a chance to complete their life cycle. 🌻😍

Despite being broken, the sunflowers served a great purpose by attracting the bees to our garden to pollinate our food plants (like our peppers πŸ«‘ and tomatoes πŸ…).

And perhaps there’s a lesson to be learned from broken sunflowers that keep blooming anyway. πŸ˜‰πŸŒ»πŸ™πŸ½

Sunflowers and tomatoes πŸŒ»πŸ…

One of my sunflowers is blooming! You can see a few of the petals peeking out. 🌻πŸ₯Ή

It makes me so happy. It feels as if I’m waiting for a baby to be born. πŸ˜„πŸŒ»πŸ˜

And the cherry tomatoes are finally blushing. I have never seen cherry tomatoes so big before!

I read that homegrown cherry tomatoes taste better than the store. I’m looking forward to seeing if that’s true. 😊

This weekend, I plan on transplanting some of my seed starter plants (okra, sugar beets, basil, cauliflower, and sugar baby watermelons) and getting a few of the fall plants started in seed trays.

Mj (24, oldest daughter) invited the kids to come hangout with her on Saturday, so this will give me some free time to focus on gardening chores.

Happy Friday

Three things to reflect on in honor of September 11th.

Low energy day, so let’s make pancakes!

My energy is low today, which is honestly pretty typical for a Wednesday for me. 😴

Today, I am taking it slow and reading Outlander (I’m on chapter 25), finishing organizing my homeschool planner, and doing a little cooking with the kids.

Outlander

Okay, don’t laugh at me, but I have been reading Outlander since last summer! Maybe longer. πŸ˜†

I struggle to stay consistent with reading books. 😫 It frustrates me because I LOVE books!

I used to be able to read one novel (under 400 pages) in 1 – 2 weeks. Now, it takes me much longer.

I partly blame social media for zapping my attention span. 😏 Last year, I stopped using Instagram regularly for this very reason (also anxiety).

Now I just hop on social media every once in awhile. It has made a huge difference for me, so hopefully this summer I will finally finish reading Outlander! πŸ˜‚

Pancakes

It’s a low energy day, so let’s make buttermilk pancakes! πŸ₯ž Zephaniah (8) and Zhen (13) helped me flip the pancakes while I washed the dishes.

Another sunflower rescue

So far, we’ve “rescued” five sunflowers we found growing in between the sidewalk. We discovered another volunteer sunflower sprout that, unfortunately, was broken.

So, I put what was left of the stem in a glass jar of water. Now it’s growing new roots! 🌻😁

One of the sunflowers we rescued is happily growing in a pot for now. Once it has outgrown this pot, I will move it to a large-size grow bag.

Lasagna for dinner

And we’re ending this chill day with a simple homemade lasagna for dinner. Zaya (5) and Zephaniah helped me make the lasagna.

So much to do tomorrow! Hopefully, today’s relaxed activities will give me the energy rejuvenation I need for Thursday.

Happy Friday!

Four fun things for Friday, including a new art exhibit I’m excited to see.

Sunflower Rescue

We found volunteer sunflower sprouts growing in between the sidewalk. It was such a random thing to see that at first I thought they were just weeds.

But as the sprouts continued to grow taller, I inspected their leaves and told Travis, “I think these are sunflowers!” 😲🌻

I didn’t even know sunflowers could grow in such a tight space. Haha! But some plants are known to grow just about anywhere, I suppose. πŸ˜„

I do wonder if we hadn’t of “rescued” the random sunflower sprouts, could they have survived growing in between the sidewalk?

We did have two sprouts that needed more time to grow their roots, so I’ve been giving them some TLC in a repurposed honey jar.

This morning, I checked the sprouts, and one is finally ready to go in a pot of soil. Once it outgrows it’s pot, I will transplant it into a grow bag.

Look at that phenomenal root growth! 😲🌻
Grow, baby grow! We’re all “rooting” for you! πŸ˜„

We have five of the volunteer sunflower sprouts currently growing in our garden beds.

They weren’t too happy about being transplanted, but after a few days and some good rainy days, they perked up and are now happy and thriving in the garden!

So, where did the volunteer sunflowers come from? My winter bird feeder! πŸ˜‚

The birds/squirrels must’ve dropped the seeds, and once the weather warmed up, the sunflower seeds germinated! 😲🌻

What makes this sunflower rescue story even funnier is I said I wasn’t going to grow sunflowers this year.

We grew beautiful sunflowers last year, but I didn’t think we’d have the space for it this gardening season because we needed the room for our grow bags.

I guess the sunflowers said, “Make room for us!” πŸ˜‚πŸŒ» #sunflowerswin
