the lion dance

We attended Moonlight Asia Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, in Madison Heights, Michigan. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese and East and Southeast Asian celebration centered around the autumn harvest and the full moon.

In February, we took the kids to the Lunar New Year Celebration at Eastern Market in Detroit, so attending the Mid-Autumn Festival gave them another opportunity to make connections with what they had already learned and experienced. Their favorite part of the festival were the cultural performances, particularly the Vietnamese Lion Dance.

In this photo series, I photographed children (including mine) waiting for the lion to come over to their section of the audience. Children patiently waited as they held dollar bills in their hands to “feed” to the lion. We learned that giving the lion money is a tradition for wishes of good luck and prosperity.

  1. What a wonderful family experience! I love how you are helping your children learn about different cultures and traditions through firsthand experiences. The Vietnamese Lion Dance sounds like a delightful highlight, especially watching the children’s excitement as they waited to feed the lion and wish for good luck and prosperity.

    1. Thank you, friend! 😊 We love learning about other cultures and attending the community cultural events.

The kids had so much fun watching the Lion Dance. My sons said they want to learn how to be the lion and do the dance one day. 😅
