How was your weekend?

Hi, friends. How was your weekend? It was rainy here all weekend, but we still got out of the house to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in our community.

Saturday

On Saturday, we took the kids to a mini Mid-Autumn Festival, which was indoors. It was a great introduction to what the celebration of mid-autumn is all about. The kids got to eat mooncakes and make a playdoh mooncake craft. I also stopped by the library’s used bookstore to buy magazines (just 50 cents each!) and old books for my mixed-media art.

After the mini Mid-Autumn Festival, we stopped by the market, and I don’t know why, but it caught me by surprise to see pumpkins and scarecrows outside. I think I’ve been in summer mode for so long that I just completely forgot that autumn officially starts this Tuesday!

Sunday

Thankfully, the rain stopped a couple of hours before Sunday’s festival was set to begin. We enjoyed watching the cultural performances. The kids said their favorite performances were the Lion Dance and a K-pop dance.

When we attended the Lunar New Year Festival this past winter, we didn’t get to see the lion dance performance, so we made sure to arrive early to the Moonlight Festival so we didn’t miss it. “It was AMAZING!” Zephaniah (9) said to me when I asked him what he thought of the lions. Zecariah (11) said he wants to “learn how to be a lion” so he can do the lion dance, too.

Here are a few more photos from our weekend celebrating at the Moonlight Festival. XO

  1. Hi, Jen! It sounds like you had a lovely weekend despite the rain. 🌧️🌕 What a wonderful way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival—introducing the children to its traditions through mooncakes, crafts, and community.

I especially loved the idea of picking up old books and inexpensive magazines from the library’s used bookstore for your mixed-media art. There is something magical about giving old pages a new life through creativity.
